A nice bright day with a
moderate SW wind; it was still pretty quiet but with a few signs of
improvement, a male Brambling was in full song at the Obs first thing (the
first one I’ve ever heard singing in Britain!) while other birds around the Obs
and the empty nets at Holland included 2 Goldfinches, a Common Redpoll, a
Collared Dove, a Blackcap and a Rook.
Birds in the middle census area then included a Short-eared Owl (my long overdue first of the year), a Goldcrest, a female Garganey on Ancum where there was also an excellent flock
of 70 Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Woodpigeons and 2 Whimbrel.
