NORTH RONALDSAY - 14th May

A stunning day with hardly a cloud in the sky and a light SE breeze; the nets and surroundings were very productive first thing with the highlight being 2 Long-eared Owls caught first thing while other birds in the area included the first Spotted Flycatcher of the year in the Kirkyard, single Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat and Garden Warbler, 2 Blackcaps, 2 Sedge Warblers, 4+ Chiffchaffs, 3+ Willow Warblers, a Tree Sparrow, 2 Mealy Redpolls, 2 Siskins and 2 Collared Doves.   Yesterday’s Red-backed Shrike was still round the Obs along with a Garden Warbler and a Chiffchaff with a ring on the left leg (when trapped later it was a Dutch control).

The Brides census route was typically quieter with a female Bluethroat at Southness (it was seen yesterday) the highlight along with 2 Whitethroats, a Garden Warbler and a Chiffchaff of note.
