A tricky day with a brisk
SE wind bringing with it nasty and very frequent (literally every half an hour
or so!) showers; in between the rain a couple of birds were caught including
the autumn’s second Barred Warbler. Most of the morning’s action was on the sea
where there was a steady movement of waders and ducks including the first Scaup of the autumn, a Pintail, 22
Wigeon, 9 Velvet Scoter, 67 Dunlin, 61 Knot and 27 Ringed Plover.
At least 12 Sparrowhawks were bombing around all over
the place while 9 Kestrels went south and 4+ Peregrines and 2 Merlins were also
chasing things and one flock of 24 Swifts also went south; a little look in Vågsvollvika
then produced single Spotted Redshank, Whimbrel, Grey Plover and Grey
Wagtail. I tried to go out into the
area later but the showers were becoming heavier and longer so I gave up on the
day!
However in the early evening a cracking juvenile PALLID HARRIER was out quartering the
fields around Vågsvollmarka together with a juvenile Hen Harrier (also my first for the autumn) – this Pallid has been
roosting at Slevdalsvann for the past week or so and has been seen out foraging
during the day over near Kviljo and but this is the first time it’s been out this
way; there were also 6 Ruff, the Spotted Redshank and 40 Teal on the now very
flooded Gunnarsmyra.
