Still nice and calm but a
persistent light rain lingered through most of the day with only a few dry
spells; the frequently interrupted ringing session produced single Reed
Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Garden Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat and the first
fully moulted migrant Robin and Blackcap of the autumn. There were a few birds around the lighthouse
through the morning including 2
Red-throated Pipits, a Grey Wagtail, 20+ Sparrowhawks zooming around all
over the place including coming in off the sea, a Buzzard out over the fields, a
couple of Merlins, roving gangs of Tree Pipits, White Wagtails and Yellow
Wagtails and a few birds on Vågsvollvåien with a Spotted Redshank, 26 Wigeon, 2
Pintail and 2 Green Sandpipers.
The coast was really quiet (I thought with the rain
and light winds there would be more waders etc.) as birds included 33 Knot, 42
Golden Plover, 80+ Teal and more Sparrowhawks and Merlins bombing around; a
Redstart and a couple of Pied and Spotted Flycatchers were the only things seen
inland.
This Pied Flycatcher had more white in its tail and tertials than normal but I couldn't really turn it into anything else!
Like a bullet!
Sparrowhawk looking miffed after diving through a flock of White Wagtails and Rock Pipits and missing everything!
