Much nicer weather today, with much lighter winds and plenty of sunshine; the nets were steady with another 70 new birds caught but again there were no real different species in the haul, made up of Reed Buntings, Chiffchaffs, Robins and Blackcaps. The only different things seen were 2 Crossbills overhead along with the usual waders and wildfowl on the estuary.
Looking out towards the sea through the morning there was a constant stream of passerines heading south along the coast so in the afternoon I headed out to the point for a look and while it obviously wasn’t as busy as it would have been earlier there was still a good southerly movement going on, highlighted by 2 Lapland Buntings just as I arrived; totals of other things seen 14:00 – 15:30 comprised 764 Meadow Pipits, 53 Skylarks, a Grey Wagtail, 17 Siskins, 18 Chaffinches, a Brambling, 6 Greenfinches, 8 Reed Buntings and a Hen Harrier in off.
An hour’s watch over the estuary from the Obs in the evening was fairly quiet but it was entertaining watching an excellent 8 White-tailed Eagles messing around together with five first years in a bunch, first closely examining a branch in the water, pecking at it and snapping at each other, then going to bother the big flock of Cranes, herding them around like Flamingos before finding an isolated juvenile and having a go at properly hunting until the two parent Cranes rushed over and chased them away!
Also of note was a little arrival of some other Geese with 2 White-fronted Geese and at least 22 Taiga Bean Geese present with the Greylags and Barnacles.
