SWEDEN - 17th October

Same again first thing, calm, clear and frosty; there were no surprises in the nets but a few bits and pieces around the reserve with the first two returning Smew and a Great White Egret on the southern pools, a Grey Wagtail and a couple of Bramblings overhead and a Hawfinch by the centre.

I closed the nets slightly early in order to head south down the highway to near Falkenberg to get decent, if a bit distant views of a perched 2cy GREATER SPOTTED EAGLE in woods as it waited with two White-tailed Eagles for the day to warm up (it was first seen yesterday), it sneakily moved perches while we weren’t looking at it to a spot out of sight so unfortunately we didn’t see it in flight.

On the way back we popped in to a couple of spots with 2 Shorelarks the highlight at Galtabäck where there was also 16 White-fronted Geese and 2 Taiga Bean Geese with thousands of Barnacle Geese.

The weather deteriorated from mid-afternoon becoming overcast and windy by the evening so I didn’t really do much else but look over the bay from the Obs where some good counts comprised 3,750+ Barnacle Geese, 994+ Herring Gulls coming in at dusk, 8 Pintail, a Pochard (my first down here), 461 Lapwings, 30 Grey Plover, 3 Ruff and the 1cy Little Gull still.
