NORTH RONALDSAY - 16th June

Calm and warm again with the nets at Holland first thing just producing baby Blackbirds and House Sparrows before a second walk through the Irises around Hooking saw more Black-headed Gull chicks ringed along with some Greylags, a Mallard and an Eider; a female Garganey was flushed out, a Tufted Duck was found on eggs and some Teal and Shoveler ducklings were seen.

Walked some of the northern census route in the afternoon where again, the waders were the highlight with a Little Stint in amongst 185 Knot, 112 Turnstone, 2 Golden Plover, 5 Bar-tailed Godwits, 15 Dunlin and 20 Sanderling – a combination of over summering non-breeders and some returning birds.   Other birds included a Mealy Redpoll strangely feeding with a flock of Turnstone around the edge of Trolla and at least 30 1st summer Arctic Terns with the breeding birds around Bewan.
