A lovely morning at Ason, clear and sunny with a little westerly breeze springing up but despite the seemingly poor netting conditions the ringing was pretty busy with a rush of birds at first light and a second wave of birds a few hours in; there was nothing too different caught but numbers did include a Lesser Whitethroat, a Brambling, a Garden Warbler, 3 Blackcaps, 13 Reed Buntings and a good run of Willow Warblers, Robins and Reed Warblers.
Other birds included 38+ Barnacle Geese, a Greenshank, single Osprey and Sparrowhawk, at least 3 White-tailed Eagles, 2 Black Woodpeckers, a Dunnock, 3 Tree Pipits and 12 Yellow Wagtails which left their roost at dawn and headed straight, high south.
A walk round the eastern part of the reserve to the edge of Sörön in the fine, sunny afternoon was fairly quiet buts birds of note comprised 4 Whooper Swans, 27 Taiga Bean Geese which flew in high from the east (well, that was my best guess to what they were anyway!) and a nice selection of raptors including 2 White-tailed Eagles, a young male Peregrine, 2 Hobbies (including one heading south, super high up, properly migrating), an Osprey, 2 Kestrels and many Buzzards and Marsh Harriers.
