SWEDEN - 19th September

A wonderfully flat calm morning with some light cloud cover at Ason led to some anticipation of some passage overhead but it was a touch disappointing; the nets were busy but again, without any real highlights unless you like Blue Tits or Reed Buntings apart from the very last bird – a jewel of a male Kingfisher caught by the bridge (one of two seen through the morning).

There was a decent array of species seen though without any real overhead passage (I was expecting some Finches and Pipits etc.) which included 9 Taiga Bean Geese, a family party of 5 Whooper Swans, 2 Goosander, a Greenshank, an Osprey (first one I’ve seen for a while now), 11 Jays (which did go south), 165+ Blue Tits – the only species that was moving in any numbers, 3 Chiffchaffs, a Mistle Thrush, a Grey Wagtail and 45+ Redpolls milling around without seemingly going anywhere.

It remained calm, sunny and warm through the afternoon and a quiet walk round to Hammarmaden produced lots of Taiga Bean Geese, 9 Goosander (my highest count so far), 10 Dunlin, a Great White Egret, 2 Rough-legged Buzzards (one hovering by the house and one high over to the south) and a young male Peregrine.
