SWEDEN - 15th September

Heavily overcast and breezy first thing and while it stayed cloudy throughout, unlike pretty much every day so far the wind, rather than strengthening died away to almost nothing, leaving perfect ringing conditions for a good session at Fågelsjön; birds caught included 5 Bluethroats, an excellent 35 Bearded Tits, a good 22 Reed Buntings, a Lesser Whitethroat, a late Whitethroat (although it had no tail, which is probably why it was still here!), a Chiffchaff, a late Marsh Warbler and the highlight – a cracking young male Lesser-spotted Woodpecker, an overdue Swedish tick!

Other birds seen through a long and productive morning and afternoon (I staying ringing until 15:30) included a Red-throated Pipit over to the south with an obvious overhead passage of Meadow Pipits, White Wagtails, a few Siskins, Chaffinches and Bramblings, Reed Buntings (quite a few were actually seen rising out of the reedbed to head off high south – very cool!) and Swallows along with a Grey Wagtail (an overdue Kvismaren tick!), 2 Yellow Wagtails and a handful of Tree Pipits, 32+ Taiga Bean Geese, 4 Whooper Swans, a big flock of 8 Great White Egrets floating over the marsh when flushed by an Eagle (the biggest flock so far), a fine 3cy male Hen Harrier, 2 White-tailed Eagles, 2 Peregrines (including one that briefly got hold of a Jackdaw) and a Wheatear.

Bluethroat – slightly atypical male

Bearded Tit

Serious fault-bars on this Reed Warbler, a very tough nestlinghood!
