Miserable, breezy and drizzly first thing so ringing was cancelled again but I went out for a good long walk around the reserve concentrating around Rysjön, Löten and the fields just to the SW; it was pretty productive despite the weather as birds included 16+ Taiga Bean Geese, 320+ Barnacle Geese, 550+ Mallard, 13 Pintail, 1,500+ Cranes, 33 Ruff and millions of Greylags feeding in the fields beyond Löten where raptors were much in evidence including a big female Goshawk which went low across, panicking everything (an overdue Kvismaren tick!), 10+ Marsh Harriers, a Sparrowhawk, a Hobby and 2 Peregrines, 4 Little Grebes and a Slavonian Grebe on Rysjön, a Grey Plover in flight over Fågelsjön (my first for ages), a flock of 26 Common Gulls south (all first-winters - by far the biggest flock I’ve seen her), a Great White Egret, 2 Sand Martins with 195+ Swallows moving through and feeding over Rysjön, a few migrants around Öby Kulle comprising 4 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Willow Warblers and 5 Goldcrest, 7 Tree Pipits and 3 Wheatears dotted around and a good southerly finch passage – as usual concentrated down the eastern edge of Rysjön which included 300+ Siskins, 120+ Chaffinches and 25+ Brambling.
In the evening we counted 10,943 Cranes coming into roost from the platform at Hammarmaden where other birds included great views of a Nightjar as it flew low past the platform at dusk, a ringtail Hen Harrier, a Sparrowhawk, 29 Taiga Bean Geese, 4 Great White Egrets, 2 Whinchat, 2 Wheatears and 80+ Meadow Pipits.
