SWEDEN - 16th September

Overcast with an increasing westerly breeze for the morning at Ason with the wind eventually forcing us to give up after only a couple of hours; the nets were practically empty of birds (but full of leaves) but a few bits of note were seen including a Bittern which flew low past the bridge pursued by a little male Sparrowhawk at first light (my first for ages and my first for this site), a Grey Plover high over to the south, a peak count here of 42 Goldeneye, 7 Dunlin, the adult Great Black-backed Gull, 4 White-tailed Eagles, a Black Woodpecker, a Grey Wagtail and the tiniest trickle of Siskins, Chaffinches and Bramblings.

A walk along the ‘Moose Road’ from late morning was quiet in the windy conditions apart from a big flock of 140+ Taiga Bean Geese in stubble fields halfway along.

A couple of hours spent along the bund at Vallen in the evening produced a nice array of species comprising 3 Hen Harriers (a smart rufous juvenile, a pale adult female and a very distant adult-looking male), 4 Whooper Swans, a few waders on Öbymaden with 2 Ruff, a Greenshank, 9 Dunlin and a Little Stint (which was inches away from being a Sparrowhawk’s tea), 2 White-tailed Eagles and a juvenile Red-backed Shrike (can’t be too many left in the area now).
