NORTH RONALDSAY - 19th August

A glorious contrast to yesterday with almost flat calm conditions and plenty of bright sunshine; opened the nets first thing where the only new migrants were single Sedge Warbler and Willow Warbler but I did re-trap the Nightingale and a juvenile Song Thrush from last week.   Other birds around Holland included a Crossbill which flew south (only the second of the year), 2 Black Redstarts, 5 Ruff, a juvenile male Peregrine and a couple more Willow Warblers – not new arrivals though.

I then walked the middle census route where the highlight was excellent views of at least four juvenile Water Rails from Ancum hide with a couple of adults not showing as well; other birds included 21 Wheatears, an influx of 34 Teal and 17 Mallard, 8 Black-tailed Godwits, 20 Knot, a Kestrel, a Heron and a Willow Warbler.
