A decent day with light winds with a couple of drizzly
spells; Holland was relatively lively first thing as birds included 6
Fieldfares, 11+ Redwings, 20+ Blackbirds, a Goldcrest and the Northern Harrier
which made a surprise reappearance (last seen on 26th March and the
first time it’s made it into April on the island!).
The
Bridesness census route was then quite busy with the Black-throated Diver also making a surprise reappearance in Nouster
along with good counts of 28 Great-northern Divers, 8 Red-throated Divers and
22 Long-tailed Ducks on calm seas while landbird migrants included 3 Wheatears,
a Chiffchaff, 16+ Pied Wagtails and a Woodpigeon. Other birds included 90+ Purple Sandpipers,
112 Golden Plover, 26 Sanderling, 4 Gadwall and 4 Pintail.
The
two Sandwich Terns were again on Gretchen in the afternoon while a big female
Sparrowhawk bounced out of the nets at Holland during a brief ringing session
which was curtailed by a long spell of heavy drizzle.
