NORTH RONALDSAY - 10th April

Once the early morning showers had moved through it was pretty much wall to wall sunshine but the very cold, strong NW wind spoiled the effect; I did a seawatch first thing from the north end where good numbers of Auks passed the hide with 125 Puffins and 1,293 Guillemot/Razorbills but not much else at all!

The middle census route was then highlighted by the Northern Harrier cruising round Ancum and a huge 1st winter female Peregrine flushed off a freshly killed Lapwing at Phisligar – the Lapwing had been ringed as a chick in May 2013 at Garso by me!!   Other birds included 4 Wheatears, 8 Redwings, 11 Bar-tailed Godwits and a young male Merlin.

In the afternoon, a single Barnacle Goose flew in from the south over the Obs – the first of the year.

She really wasn't happy that I flushed her off her breakfast!
