LANDGUARD - 9th April

On paper, a similar day to yesterday albeit with a bit more sun and warmth but there was a nice spread of migrants across the area through the morning – at least compared to the spring so far!   New birds included a Blackcap, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Goldcrests, a Grey Wagtail, 46 Meadow Pipits in off, the first stunning male Redstart of the year, 2 Sand Martins south, 2 Sparrowhawks, 3 Swallows south, 3 Wheatears and the first 2 Whimbrel of the year which flew south along the beach.

Other little bits comprised the Black Redstart still singing from the fort, 6 Common Scoter north, a Curlew heading high out east, a Great-crested Grebe, 24 Red-throated Divers, 2 Rook south and 3 Shoveler south at sea.

A little walk around Felixstowe Ferry in the afternoon was pretty quiet with two singing Sedge Warblers and two Swallows the only migrant action although a Cormorant soaring with 4 Buzzards high over the river was odd and a Kestrel on the golf course running around on one of the greens chasing insects like a wader was fun!
