LANDGUARD - 31st March

A change of routine saw me walking round Felixstowe Ferry at first light and once the early morning mist had burnt off it was another gorgeous start of the day; there was a good selection of birds around highlighted by a booming Bittern in a small reedbed on Kingsfleet which gave very brief views, a pair of Little Owls at a nestbox on the golf course and a singing Sedge Warbler, also on the golf course – I can’t remember the last time I saw a March Sedgie!

Other birds included a Ruff on one of the pools just upstream from the ferry, 3 Mediterranean Gulls (a pair of adults flying over the river and a 2cy on the golf course), 3 Little Egrets, 2 Chiffchaffs, at least seven singing Cetti’s Warblers, a singing Blackcap, a Yellowhammer and a big increase of Reed Bunting pairs back on territory.

In the afternoon I walked down to Trimley Marshes which was again, very pleasant where birds of note comprised a brilliant flock of 337+ Black-tailed Godwits roosting at high tide, most of which were in breeding plumaged, a single White-fronted Goose remaining, 2 Egyptian Geese, still 10 Pintail with the other ducks, 42 Avocets, single Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit and Knot with the roosting Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Oystercatchers, 4 Little Egrets, at least 6 Marsh Harriers, a Red Kite, another singing Sedge Warbler, at least 11 Chiffchaffs, three singing Cetti’s Warblers and a Black Redstart fly-catching from the bushes near the centre.
