Another grey morning but it was very calm – still very cold though; a morning off ringing saw me walking down to Trimley Marshes via Loompit Lake from first light. There was a bit of summer migrant action comprising a fine male Yellow Wagtail which flew over Loompit, 30+ Sand Martins, 13 Swallows, 3 House Martins, at least five singing Blackcaps, at least eight singing Chiffchaffs and the Trimley singing Sedge Warbler.
Other birds included at least five singing Cetti’s Warblers, 20 Avocets, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 55 Tufted Ducks and 15 Pochard on Loompit and 106 Shoveler at Trimley.
The sun came out at lunchtime creating a much pleasanter afternoon with 2 Black Redstarts (including the singing fort bird still) and 7 Swallows south, back at Landguard.
