Yesterday’s fog very
slowly dissipated through the day with the light easterly breeze; opened the
nets again first thing but it was pretty quiet really with a British control
Siskin the highlight with other birds including a Goldcrest, a Chiffchaff, a
Ring Ouzel, 3 Woodcock, 5 Mistle Thrushes, 4 Woodpigeons, 4 Chaffinches and a
Brambling. I then did a trap round at
the Obs when I got back which produced the day’s highlight of a Swiss ringed
Robin in T3 – certainly the first Swiss bird for the island and probably the
first Swiss Robin to be controlled in the UK!
I then cheated a bit and did the west coast rather
than my scheduled Hooking census route but it was probably the correct decision
as there were some good totals of common migrants along that route with the
easterly wind – these included 15 Ring Ouzels, 55
Robins, 20 Dunnocks, a Grey Wagtail, 2 Blackcaps, 6 Chiffchaffs, 5 Woodcock, 2
Woodpigeons, single Sparrowhawk and Merlin, 12 Wheatears, 70+ Blackbirds, 60+
Fieldfares, a Chaffinch and 2 Bramblings.
