NORTH RONALDSAY - 10th April

Overcast and very calm in the morning so we made an early start to carry out the annual Black Guillemot count – we ended up on 792 birds (c50 down on last year but still a very high count).   There was some migration going on as well while I was out counting with a Woodpigeon in off the sea, numerous Greylag flocks heading out and coming back in again and a couple of Curlew flocks heading north; 12 Great-northern Divers were off the south end.

Walked the middle census route in the afternoon where there were a few migrants scattered around including 2 Goldcrest, 8 Wheatears (c60 for the day – the first notable arrival), 5 Sandwich Terns off The Links, a Woodcock, 30 Meadow Pipits, 15 Robins and a Chiffchaff.   Opened the nets in the evening and ended up with about 30 new birds, mainly Blackbirds but a also a young female Sparrowhawk, a Goldcrest and a Dunnock.
