NORTH RONALDSAY - 1st September

A very different day, completely overcast with very light and decreasing SW winds; I started with a walk round the Obs which produced single Red-throated Diver and Great-northern Diver and 2 Herons which headed out south.   An hour’s seawatch then just produced 4 Sooty Shearwaters and 16 Manx Shearwaters before a long walk (in two goes) around the northern census route was a bit frustrating (considering how much arrived on Fair Isle and Shetland yesterday) as 2 Willow Warblers were pretty much the only migrant Passerines.   Other birds included a 3cy Peregrine, 8 Knot, 2 Whimbrel, a few flocks of Snipe whizzing around, quite a few Meadow Pipits and alba Wagtails scattered around and a Heron on Bewan which caught an Eel.
