NORTH RONALDSAY - 10th September

A rough day with a strong SW wind and heavy showers sweeping through becoming more and more frequent through the afternoon; my Hooking census route was interrupted as I had to rush back to the Obs to see a cracking LANCEOLATED WARBLER that had been caught by hand at Sandar – only the fifth island record!   Birds actually on my census route later included 2 Common Rosefinches together at Barrenha, my first two Pintail of the autumn on the loch along with 21 Teal, a Gadwall and 22 Mallard, 8 Red-throated Divers offshore, 4 Sand Martins including a tired looking juvenile sheltering on The Links dyke and an influx of 46 Common Gulls and 13 Herring Gulls on The Links.

There was then a Spotted Flycatcher (a young looking one with lots of retained coverts etc.), a Pied Flycatcher, a Garden Warbler and a Willow Warbler in Holland as I walked back through.
