After a crazy, wet and wild night it was still blustery
in the morning but more or less dry so I walked up the relatively sheltered
west side; the highlight came early on as a look off the pier across Nouster
produced a Red-necked Grebe which
flew in, landed for a couple of minutes before flying off around Stromness
Point – only about the fifth island record!
The Black-throated Diver was
also in the bay.
There
were small signs of some migration up the coast as a Blackbird was seen coming
in, low across the sea and along the sheltered walls there were single Song
Thrush and Robin with 5+ more Blackbirds.
The
first Stonechat of the year – a smart
male, was later caught in T4 before the weather turned wet and nasty again
through the afternoon.
