NORTH RONALDSAY - 21st March

A much nicer day with very light winds and only a little bit of rain in the morning to spoil things; a Grey Wagtail, a noticeable increase of 21 Meadow Pipits, a male Stonechat at the school and a Song Thrush were the passerine highlights of the C census route while much calmer seas produced counts of 9+ Great-northern Divers, 5 Red-throated Divers, 23 Long-tailed Ducks and 8 Red-breasted Mergansers.   Also of note was an increased count of 49 Sanderling on The Links and a group of 6 Whooper Swans on the pool behind The Links wall which included a 1st winter.

A smart adult male Merlin came in off the sea at the pier in the afternoon while a new 1st winter male Peregrine flew over Holland while we had the nets open – which produced 4 Blackbirds and a Linnet.
