Heavy rain, thunder and lightning
through the morning until around 10:00 when there was a weather window allowing
me to get out around the coast for a couple of hours where there was a good
selection of waders concentrated in Sevika; although there was nothing unusual
totals included 80 Dunlin, 55 Redshank, 6 Turnstone, 9 Common Sandpipers, 4
Wood Sandpipers, 13 Greenshank, 6 Bar-tailed Godwits, 5 Ruff, 32 Knot, parties
of Snipe whizzing around and a single Spotted Redshank which were flushed every
so often by at least 3 Peregrines and a Merlin although I never saw them catch
anything.
Other birds included 32 Teal, 5 Wigeon, 50 Mallards,
78 Greylag Geese and 8 Herons before the day’s highlight of a big juvenile
female Goshawk was flying around
Lebeltet Nord – my first of the autumn.
The weather closed in again just after lunch with more heavy rain and
strong easterly winds which put an end to my enthusiasm to get out and about!
I didn't take my camera out today due to the showers that were sweeping though during the weather window of 'slightly' nicer conditions so here's a selection of waders we caught in Australia in 2012 - all of which I've been trying to find here at Lista but it hasn't worked yet! Plenty of time left....
Great Knot (with geolocator)
Long-toed Stint
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper
Terek Sandpiper
And the two races of Gull-billed Terns over there with the smaller, migratory affinis race above and the larger Australian resident macrotarsa below.
