A glorious, calm, sunny,
hot, beautiful day with a few birds around the lighthouse through the morning
including 4 Yellow Wagtails, 4 Tree Pipits, the first Brambling of the autumn, a
Green Woodpecker, 13 Crossbills overhead, a young male Peregrine and 3
Sparrowhawks through while out across the fields there were 66 Golden Plover, 4
Ruff, 5 Lapwings and a couple of Whimbrels along with the usual big Curlew
flock.
The day picked up from late morning when a few
raptors started moving in the fine conditions highlighted by a distant Honey Buzzard away over Borhaug; it was
very difficult to work out how many raptors there actually were as they were
flying around all over the place but conservative counts comprised 30+
Sparrowhawks, 16+ Kestrels, 2 Marsh Harriers, a Merlin and 10 Buzzards.
Other birds seen through the afternoon spent
squinting up into the blue sky included good views of a BEE-EATER hawking over Groda mid-afternoon (with it or another
heard again over Lebeltet Nord an hour later), 2 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Tree
Pipits, a Pied Flycatcher, 5 Whinchats and a Spotted Redshank over Gunnarsmyra
while 11 Greenshank and 18 Redshank were in Verevågen.
