Heavy rain for the first
couple of hours soon drifted away to leave a nice, sunny day; there were a few
waders on the move offshore with small numbers of Knot, Dunlin and
Oystercatchers heading south while the first 5 juvenile Kittiwakes of the
autumn went north as did a drake Velvet Scoter and a couple of Bonxies were
lingering with intent. Other birds in
the morning included a Little Grebe
on Vågsvollvåien (actually only the third ever August record!) where there were
also 5 Ruff and c30 Snipe with 22 Knot and 9 Dunlin resting in Vågsvollvika.
There were good numbers of waders around the coast
where totals comprised 29 Greenshank, 24 Common Sandpipers, 26 Redshank, 3 Wood
Sandpipers, 36 Dunlin, 2 Sanderling and single Little Stint and Turnstone while
46 Teal was another slight increase.
Three
Sparrowhawks were hunting along the coast while inland birds of note included 9
Red-backed Shrikes of various ages, 2 Pied Flycatchers and 5 Crossbills (with a
couple of them having interesting deep calls but I couldn’t get good enough
views of them). Out across the fields
there was a notable increase to 47 Golden Plover along with 72 Curlew, 4
Bar-tailed Godwits and 2 Ruff.
A selection of Knots
