NORTH RONALDSAY - 9th October

Heavy drizzle persisted through the morning, not clearing until nearly midday, a walk round the Obs coast in the rain produced 13 Snow Buntings and 8 Bramblings around the Funny Park, 3 Swallows still round Holland and a few Redwings around.   The Brides census route was then pretty good but there was nothing really new to be seen as birds included a Common Rosefinch with the Sparrows and Linnets in Kirbest (the bird that was ringed a few days ago), a Short-eared Owl, a Hen Harrier, a Jack Snipe in Kirbest, 66 Redwing, 6 Wheatears, 5 Whooper Swans flying around (three juveniles), 11 Reed Buntings, a Lapland Bunting, 19 Snow Buntings on the beach at Howar and 4 Twite while 22 Red-throated Divers and 2 Great-northern Divers were offshore.
