Two Water Rails
around the second Benthall Pool were the highlight of a walk round the usual
Wyke-Benthall route on the 1st before a little walk over the very
grey, windy and cold Long Mynd produced good views of a pair of Red Grouse and a brief look at Venus
Pool saw good numbers of birds in the top field including 10+ Corn Buntings
(one was singing near the carpark) and a female Brambling.
The
following day a drive round the Meres in the afternoon only produced two drake
Pintail on The Mere of note before a walk round the desolate and windswept
Whixall Moss then produced the regular adult male Hen Harrier and at least 2
Merlins – one of which was actively following the hunting Harrier, no doubt
hoping for something being flushed!
