A fabulously calm day with
plenty of cloud produced an awesome morning’s visible migration with thousands
of passerines heading NW over the lighthouse throughout the morning; the main
numbers were made up of an excellent 3,130
Bramblings, 665 Meadow Pipits and 682 Siskins while other totals included 41 Grey Wagtails, 34 Swallows, 29 Reed
Buntings, 14 Yellowhammers, 20 Redpolls, 30 Goldfinch, 28 Greenfinches and 24
Skylarks along with 3 Black Woodpeckers which came out, 3 Lapland Buntings and a single Tree Pipit. The nets were fairly quiet but did include a
smart Yellow-browed Warbler and a
Treecreeper with a few Goldcrests.
There were few grounded migrants in the afternoon but
a Short-eared Owl and a Richard’s Pipit
were over Seviksmarka, a big female Goshawk
was around Lebeltet Nord, the three Brent Geese were still present, 350+
Siskins were flying around the plantations and 2 Jack Snipe were near Sevika.
The evening’s excitement was twitching an awesome Gyrfalcon perched out on Steinodden, it
showed really well in the fading light both perched and flying around – a fantastic
brute of a bird!
