NORTH RONALDSAY - 18th April

Yet again similar conditions but sunny and warm with the wind maybe easing a touch; it was pleasant to be out and about where the highlight was a lovely male Bluethroat near Vincoin – I was expecting it to be a White-spotted when it popped out but surprisingly it was a Red-spotted, a month early for this race and by far the earliest for the island (previous earliest was 8th May).   Other totals from the north and cycling up the island included a Sparrowhawk, a Grey Plover, a Woodpigeon, 2 Dunnocks, 25 Robins, a Black Redstart at Vincoin, 16 Wheatears, a Song Thrush, 3 Redwing, a Willow Warbler, 10 Chiffchaff, 3 Goldcrest, 2 Jackdaws, a Carrion Crow, a hybrid Crow (first of the year) and a Brambling.

It was also a very good day for vis mig with lots of things on the move including 50+ Curlews high north, a steady stream of Great Black-backs high north, Meadow Pipits coming in and a few Hooded Crows and the hybrid heading off north.
