A very strong southerly
wind and heavy cloud replaced the fine conditions but it remained dry
throughout the day; I went up to the top end first thing but the sea was very
quiet, it was worth it though as there was a big arrival of large Gulls with
300 Great Black-backed Gulls and 200 Herring Gulls roosting around the loch and
on the grass in amongst which was a 1cy Glaucous Gull on Bewan where there was
also the long overdue first Goldeneye of the autumn
and 2 Jackdaws.
Birds around the Hooking census route later on
included 3 Hen Harriers (the adult male and 2 1cy birds), more big Gulls with
many seemingly moving south, 65 Ringed Plover, 36 Dunlin, 8 Long-tailed Ducks,
50+ Mallard, 5 Shoveler, 4 Snow Buntings, 12 Fieldfare, a Song Thrush, 20
Redwing and 2 Woodcock in Holland. A
look at Brides in the afternoon then just produced another, paler 1cy Glaucous Gull.
