NORTH RONALDSAY - 1st November

A lovely day once the early morning rain had moved through with light SW winds and plenty of sunshine; totals around the Obs census route included a Black-throated Diver in Nouster, 4 Red-throated Divers, 3 Long-tailed Ducks, the Green-winged Teal still on Gretchen, a single Common Redpoll, 8 Chaffinches, 2 Brambling, 34 Twite, 18 Fieldfare, 20 Redwing, a Kestrel and 2 Snow Buntings.

Opened the nets at Ancum late afternoon and managed to catch (presumably) the Nether Linnay Redpoll flock coming into roost which consisted of 12 Common Redpolls (all had wing lengths of 75-80), a single Lesser Redpoll (wing length of 70) and the potential Coue’s Arctic Redpoll but it was getting dark, starting to rain and I didn’t really have time to grill it but I wasn’t really convinced so it went down as a Common.

Twite

Presumably a migrant continental Wren (on the right), slightly bigger, paler and gingerier
