NORTH RONALDSAY - 28th October

A glorious change in the weather to extremely light winds which eventually swung round into the east and plenty of bright sunshine – still cold though!   The Hooking census route was generally quiet but with a few decent birds, the highlight was a fine, young male Bluethroat along a dyke near The Links, the long-staying Whinchat along The Links wall, 33+ Snow Buntings (with a few odd singles going south in the fine conditions plus a flock of 29), 2 Kestrels (including one high south), 480+ Greylag Geese and 7 Long-tailed Ducks but it was just a joy to be out in the field in the fine conditions!

Went back out to do the bottom half of the northern census route in the afternoon but it was pretty quiet with the exception of a Little Auk which flew in from the north and carried on down the centre of the island before I opened the nets at Ancum which was also quiet with a smart Siberian Chiffchaff the highlight along with some Linnet, Chaffinch and Brambling.
