The trip degenerated into
more relaxing/beaches/drinking than proper birding through these few days but I
did spend a good amount of time birding around my new little local patch in the
remaining forest along the coast near our hippy dippy accommodation at Ao
Nambao; it wasn’t too bad though with a nice selection of birds seen including
a few waterbirds with Yellow Bittern, Striated Heron, Chinese Pond Heron,
Little Egret and Great White Egret on the coast and at a small pool in the
forest and Whimbrel, Pacific Golden Plover and Common Sandpiper on the beach
with White-bellied Sea-eagle and Brahminy Kite overhead.
Birds seen in the forest included a LITTLE BRONZE CUCKOO, a couple of BLACK-BELLIED MALKOHA sightings,
several GERMAIN’S SWIFTLETS in
amongst the other Swiftlets seen overhead especially at dawn and dusk, a PUFF-THROATED BABBLER skulking in the
undergrowth, Greater Coucal, many, very noisy Collared and White-throated
Kingfishers, Dollarbirds, Hoopoe, Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters, a pair of
Coppersmith Barbets visiting a nest hole, a pair of Lineated Barbets,
Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Ashy Minivet, Black-naped Oriole, Pied Fantail,
Black Drongo, Southern Jungle Crows, Common Iora, Olive-backed Sunbird, several
pairs of Brown-throated Sunbirds feeding fledglings, Common Mynas, Oriental
Magpie-Robins, Streak-eared Bulbuls, Yellow-vented Bulbuls, Pacific, Barn and
Red-rumped Swallows, Common and Dark-necked Tailorbirds and Golden-bellied
Gerygone.
There were a few wintering birds as well with BROWN-STREAKED FLYCATCHER, Asian Brown
Flycatcher, Dark-sided Flycatcher and Pale-legged Leaf Warblers seen. The one boast trip out to the islands I did
just produced a big flock of 100+ LESSER
FRIGATEBIRDS.
