Got a lift down to Khao
Pra Bang Khram (the famous Gurney’s Pitta forest site) but in the very thick
jungle with me not knowing any calls it was always going to be a difficult and
a frustrating birding session which when combined with thousands of tourists
crawling all over the place from mid-morning (it was Chinese New Year and a holiday
so maybe it wasn’t a surprise!) it was a tad frustrating at times but I battled
on and wandered around for over six hours!
Birds I did see included a smart dark phase CRESTED SERPENT-EAGLE calling and
displaying over the forest, a single VERNAL
HANGING PARROT, several GREY-RUMPED
TREESWIFTS overhead, a pair of ASIAN
PARADISE FLYCATCHERS, a very smart BLACK-NAPED
MONARCH, a couple of GREAT IORAS,
several GREY-BREASTED SPIDERHUNTERS,
a very bright male VAN HASSELT’S SUNBIRD,
a pair of YELLOW-VENTED FLOWERPECKERS
feeding a tree with several SCARLET-BACKED
FLOWERPECKERS, a Grey Wagtail feeding on a stream, many BLACK-HEADED BULBULS, a very dull
looking CREAM-VENTED BULBUL and a
couple of migrants including an EASTERN-CROWNED
WARBLER and several Brown Flycatchers.
Also of note were things like Dark-necked Tailorbird,
Streak-eared Bulbul, Oriental Magpie-Robin and Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker but
perhaps unsurprisingly no Gurney’s Pitta!
