The exception to these few
days was a morning boat trip out in the mangroves from Krabi Town;
unfortunately the timing wasn’t great as it was bang on a really low tide so we
couldn’t go up many of the smaller streams but it was pretty good with probably
the highlight being awesome views of a family of Smooth-coated Otters playing in the water and on the muddy banks
before disappearing back into the mangroves.
It was also fantastic for Kingfishers with brilliant
views of Brown-winged, Collared, Black-headed and Common Kingfishers along the
banks; several Mangrove Pittas were heard calling, as was a GREATER RACKET-TAILED DRONGO and a GREEN-BILLED MALKOHA flew across the
river while other birds included a couple of showy White-bellied Sea-eagles, a
Common Flameback, a few HOUSE SWIFTS
with Swiftlets and smart Rufous-bellied Swallows, Ashy Minivet, Dollarbird,
Brahminy Kite, Striated Heron, Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper while afterwards
in Krabi there was Coppersmith Barbet, a smart adult male Brown Shrike and
Black-naped Oriole.
