Made an early start and
walked out along the shore to the end of the Laem Pak Bia Sandspit where birds
roosting out on the tip included a single male WHITE-FACED PLOVER running around chasing some of the 30+ MALAYSIAN PLOVERS on the beach and 4 PALLAS’S GULLS and 2 HEUGLIN’S GULLS roosting with some
Brown-headed Gulls and a couple of Caspian Terns. Other birds along the coast included several
PACIFIC REEF EGRETS, a big flock of
Whiskered and White-winged Black Terns fishing offshore, all the usual Egrets
and Herons and a few other waders including Whimbrel, Greater Sand Plovers and
Common Sandpipers.
Bush birds also included a little party of RACKET-TAILED TREEPIES, a smart male BROWN-HEADED SUNBIRD, a couple of
Greater Coucals, several Dusky Warblers and seemingly a little trickle of
Red-rumped Swallows and Barn Swallows heading north along the coast.
The hottest part of the day was then spent back at
the King’s Project area where new birds for the trip included a WHITE-THROATED KINGFISHER, a SWINHOE’S SNIPE, a male CHESTNUT MUNIA and a Striated Heron; the rest of the birds
were similar to yesterday with much better views of White-breasted Waterhen,
Oriental Reed Warbler, a couple of Common Snipe, excellent views of many waders
including Long-toed Stint, Little Ringed Plover (including a Thai flagged
bird), Pacific Golden Plover, Marsh Sandpiper and Ruff etc. a couple of Eastern
Yellow Wagtails and the same species in the Mangroves including a few more
Dusky Warblers.
Mooching around in the late afternoon then produced
the same birds at the rubbish dump including Brown Shrike and a few Dusky
Warblers and a pair of Malaysian Plovers back on the beach – the female of
which had a single white colour ring but I don’t know where it’s from yet.
Male White-faced Plover - I think its still unsure what these birds actually are since they made the birding press about ten years ago; they are either a species in their own right or a new race of Kentish Plover!
