SWEDEN - 31st October

A beautiful, flat calm morning, lightly overcast and perfect for ringing, the only bits of note in the nets though were a selection of seven Redpolls which I put down as 4 Lesser and 3 Commons; other birds included 11 Pintail, a Water Rail heard squealing (surprisingly the first I’ve had down here), 30 Grey Plover, a Spotted Redshank, a Sparrowhawk which bounced out of a net, a Grey Wagtail over and still 10+ Bearded Tits in the reeds.

A walk out on the point at lunchtime was pretty quiet apart from the usual big flock of 90+ Twite and 4 Snow Buntings which flew north – an expected Swedish tick!

The only other birds of note were in the bay back at the house, where a Guillemot was added to the house list, presumably a sick bird as it was on one of the islands and shortly afterwards, was eaten by a White-tailed Eagle (!) along with 2 Shoveler which were also a house tick.
