A rough day, with a very strong southerly wind bringing regular bouts of drizzly rain; two sessions of seawatching (07:30 – 09:30 and 12:15 – 13:15) were productive with the highlights being 3 Bonxies in the morning and a total of 13 Scaup, one with a flock of Goldeneye in the morning and a flock of 12 in the afternoon – both Swedish ticks!
Other birds out on the point included 4 Shelduck, 2 Velvet Scoter, 26 Common Scoter, 62 Goldeneye, 22 Red-breasted Mergansers, 4 Guillemots, 25 Razorbills, 11 Kittiwakes, 5 Red-throated Divers, 17 Gannets and a late Wheatear along the sheltered northern shore – unfortunately very normal, no matter how long I stared at it!
Again, all other birds of note came in the bay, as viewed from the house and included 3 Greenshank, a Redshank, 200+ Dunlin, 32 Grey Plover, 15 Curlew and a little influx of ducks producing counts of 771 Wigeon, 345 Teal, 15 Shoveler and 60 Gadwall (the last two being the highest totals I’ve had here).
