NORTH RONALDSAY - 5th May

The cold, strong NW wind continued to sweep across the island but there was plenty of bright sunshine and only a few, short wintery showers; most of the new arrivals involved the increasing wader numbers which are building up nicely to their mid-May peaks which today comprised 304 Purple Sandpipers, 9 Knot and 475 Turnstone along with single Whimbrel and Grey Plover.

Other birds included 4 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Kestrel, 25 Golden Plover, 3 Sandwich Terns, an influx of 35+ Arctic Terns, a Robin, 30 Wheatears, 3 Fieldfares, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Blackcap, 4 Chiffchaff and a Brambling.
