NORTH RONALDSAY - 13th March

A glorious day with acres of blue sky and a very light easterly breeze; walked to Hooking, then up The Links to Neven and back down the middle of the island but it was pretty quiet despite the beautiful conditions with single Chaffinch and Mistle Thrush at Hooking, 2 Hen Harriers (Hooking and Breck), the Kumlien’s Gull on the beach at Hooking, 15 Tufted Ducks, 6 Pintail, 12 Long-tailed Ducks and the Whooper Swan still on Ancum.

Opened the nets late afternoon with the definite highlight being a BLUE TIT which I saw as I was opening and was caught soon after (fourth record for the island and the first in spring!) other birds included 3 Mistle Thrushes, a pair of Stonechats just down the road (the first of the year), a Linnet, 2 Song Thrushes and a handful of Redwings, Fieldfares and Blackbirds (eight new ones caught).
