10th and 11th February

A couple of days looking for the usual suspects around the Highlands, dodging the strong winds and heavy snow showers but it wasn’t as bad as the media made it out to be; I did pretty well, seeing most of the things I set out to including two male Capercaillie at a site somewhere near Carrbridge, some good, confiding Crested Tits at Loch Garten, a 2cy Golden Eagle up the Findhorn Valley and at least three Scottish Crossbills at a site near Grantown-on-Spey – at least they were in the right tree species, were chunky birds with big-looking bills and to my ears sounded different to birds down south and ones seen elsewhere over these couple of days (a deeper and less defined call, lacking the sharp, higher pitched ‘chip’ aspect), which is as good as you’re going to get with these I feel!   The only bonus bird to mention was a Long-eared Owl heard calling at a carpark near Boat-of-Garten where I parked the van up to sleep.
