19th August

Not a cloud in the sky but the very strong NE wind continued; the couple of nets I was able to open for a short time yielded single Tree Pipit, Redstart and Lesser Whitethroat with 9 Willow Warblers indicating that there were a few birds about.   There was a much reduced Greylag Goose passage when compared to the last few days but waders continued to go south at sea including 200 Knot, 110 Dunlin, 30 Ringed Plovers and 40 Redshank.   Other birds through the morning included 24 Crossbills, 6+ Tree Pipits, 3 Yellow Wagtails, a Fieldfare, 2 Carrion Crows around Vågsvollvåien and a couple each of Merlin, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Stayed away from the very exposed coast for the rest of the day and concentrated around the sheltered spots inland which produced 2 juvenile Cuckoos in Lebeltet Nord, 4 Spotted Flycatchers, a Pied Flycatcher, a Redstart, a Garden Warbler, 5 more Kestrels, 3 Red-backed Shrikes, a Buzzard and a good group of 15 Whinchats along a single fence at Vågsvoll.

This Sparrowhawk attacked a Dunlin, forcing it to crash dive into the water and actually stay submerged for a while hence it hovering over the sea.   Its ace at the moment for watching raptors hunt, just find a flock of waders and wait a while, one will be along soon enough!
