SWEDEN - 20th June

A little look on Rysjön first thing produced some evidence of a little turnover of waders with the 20+Ruff including a few non-breeding plumaged birds along with 8 Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank, c25 Wood Sandpipers and a new Ringed Plover; other birds included 6 Red-necked Grebes, a Hobby which got a lot of stick from the Black Terns and two Spotted Flycatchers by the house were new for my Swedish list!

We then drove an hour north and entered the forests near Morskaga where the fantastic highlight (and target) was brilliant views of two GREAT GREY OWL chicks on a nest just off a forest road with an equally brilliant adult seen c40m away from the nest before melting away into the trees like the ghosts that they are.   Other birds here included a fine male Red-backed Shrike, some Crested Tits, a pair of Whooper Swans on a lake and a few other woodland birds such as Whinchat, Tree Pipit, Siskin etc.
