The recent gale force westerly winds slowly eased through
the day but unfortunately stayed in the west; carried out the annual Orkney
Winter Goose Count in the morning and ended up with an island total of 1,451 Greylag Geese while 3 Great-northern Divers were off the pier. Walked around Nether Linney / Westness /
Ancum in the afternoon which produced 74 Snow Buntings (59 on Lenswick Beach and
15 south over Ancum), a Chiffchaff at Ancum House, a Jack Snipe at Westness, 21
Redwings (including one which was chased and caught by a Hooded Crow), a Song
Thrush, 2 Robins, 2 adult Whooper Swans, 4 Herons and a Red-breasted Merganser.
