NORTH RONALDSAY - 9th May

Not a bad morning although overcast with a chilly westerly breeze; managed seven new birds at Holland in the morning comprising 2 Siskins, 2 Willow Warblers and single Linnet, Blackcap and Song Thrush while yesterday’s fine male Redstart was re-trapped.

I walked the west coast census route in the increasing westerly wind but one of yesterday’s fine summer plumaged White-billed Divers was still close inshore off Torness along with 3 Great-northern Divers while a drake Common Scoter went south and a flock of 10 Black-tailed Godwits flew high north out at sea.   Other birds included 4 Snow Buntings, a Merlin unsuccessfully chasing Purple Sandpipers, 2 male Ring Ouzels on Westbeach, a Lesser Whitethroat and 17 Wheatears while there were 7 more Black-tailed Godwits on Gretchen while the Dunlin still carried out crazy, fluttering display flights.
