NORTH RONALDSAY - 8th May

The Red-winged Blackbird showed well first thing for the latest batch of twitchers at Garso before I walked the Hooking census route where the highlights were large numbers of waders on The Links including 185 Sanderling and 140 Turnstone all looking very smart in summer plumage; it was quiet for other birds with 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Great-northern Divers, single Lesser Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff and a Shoveler nest with 7 eggs around Hooking.

The day’s highlight came early afternoon with good, if distant views of a cracking summer plumaged WHITE-BILLED DIVER off Torness (there were two but the other had drifted off); a Grey Wagtail flew along the coast while we were watching the Diver and there were still 3 Snow Buntings on there.

Holland was quiet in the late afternoon but birds around here and the Obs included a male Redstart trapped, single Blackcap and Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Brambling, a male Siskin and another Redpoll sp. trapped, this time a very worn 1st summer female.
