A ridiculous day considering
it’s the second week of September – clear, sunny, calm and very warm but
perhaps surprisingly there was a decent arrival of birds in the garden first
thing (but it was pretty much all over three hours in) as we managed 108 new
birds caught including a Grasshopper
Warbler, 3 Red-backed Shrikes, a
Firecrest and a Marsh Warbler in amongst the usual species such as 42 Robins, 23
Chiffchaffs, 7 Redstarts and Lesser Whitethroats, Blackcaps, Dunnocks etc. It was quieter overhead with small numbers
of Siskins, Chaffinches, Tree Pipits and Yellow Wagtails along with a Grey
Wagtail, Dunlin, Grey Plover and a few Sparrowhawks.
I caught up with the very smart looking, very white
Common Buzzard over the fields to the north of Birkemose in the afternoon where
two Cranes also flew north before a little look from the point (1600-1730) just
produced 46 Wigeon, a Shoveler, 13 Velvet Scoter and a Red-necked Grebe.
Grasshopper Warbler
Really smart, crazy looking white Buzzard
who was with this more normal but still pretty distinctive individual
Velvet Scoter
