A great ringing day, overcast with a light (although a bit stronger in the afternoon) NW wind – the best conditions here for good numbers of birds; an all-day ringing session (a crazy first hour with 100+ birds and steady the rest of the day) ended up with an excellent total of 209 new birds, there were however, no real highlights in amongst the catch, just good numbers of common migrants including 20 Redstarts, 19 Lesser Whitethroats, 45 Whitethroats, 39 Garden Warblers, 44 Willow Warblers, 12 Pied Flycatchers, 6 Icterine Warblers and 3 Marsh Warblers. The Barred Warbler from the 9th was re-trapped as the last bird of the evening and had put on 6.5g weighing 32.1g up from 25.6g went it was originally caught.
Didn’t really go anywhere else through the day,
although there were a few other bits seen around with a little wader movement
overhead through the morning including Golden Plover, Ringed Plover, Green
Sandpiper, Snipe, Curlew and Redshank all heard going over the garden in the
morning; a juvenile Red-backed Shrike
and one of the ringed Common Rosefinches
were in the garden, a Raven fought with a Marsh Harrier over the fields and the
Combine Harvester busy in the fields around the garden had an instant effect
with a flock of 48 Lapwings, 2 Buzzards and a brood of three ¾ grown Grey
Partridges who seemed very confused that their cover had disappeared in the
surrounding fields.
